Managing Your Planet
Once you've colonized a planet, the real work begins!
Now you have to manage its needs, resources,
trade, facilities, ship construction, and population.
The first menu you will see after dropping
your passengers off, is the Planet Management screen.
First is the Trade menu:

You start off with NO commodities... and no
way to produce from raw materials, what might be on the planet.
Remember, people have never been to this planet before. You are the
first. It won't be easy to make it livable, but it can prove very
lucrative if you do!
If you don't start getting water, food, and medical supplies shipped in quickly, you will soon have an all out rebellion on your hands... with your inhabitants looking for a ship going anywhere but to your planet, the same way as you picked them up from somewhere else to begin with.
Organic compounds and metal alloys will be needed in huge quantities to build the facilities your planet needs to begin self-sustaining life.
Second is the Facilities Management
window:

Here you can build facilities for making food, medical supplies, organics and metals, consumer goods, and the ability to raise your planets technology level.
Each facility requires a certain amount of credits, metals, and organics. You will not be able to begin building on a facility until you have all the credits and resources ready.
They also will each have a set amount of time it takes to build them. The first level will mostly take 24 hours.
As you advance in technology level, they will take more products and time to build, because the facilities will obviously be more advanced.
